Provenance

Where it came from

Bonehoard was originally introduced in the Scars of Mirrodin expansion in 2010. It fits into the block's focus on the war between the metallic Phyrexians and the native Mirrans, featuring a mechanics-heavy design centered on the 'living weapon' keyword. This ability creates an equipment card that enters the battlefield attached to a germ creature token, effectively providing a creature body that scales in power based on the number of cards in all graveyards.

The artwork was commissioned from the artist Chippy, whose distinct, painterly style brought a gritty, visceral aesthetic to the piece. By depicting a construct formed from the discarded remains of the fallen, the design reinforces the theme of attrition warfare. The card was later reprinted in the 2017 Commander Anthology, which brought together some of the most iconic cards from the first four years of the Commander product line, helping the card reach a broader audience of players in the multiplayer format.
