Provenance

Where it came from

Braingeyser was originally released as part of the Alpha set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield. As a powerful blue sorcery that allowed players to draw a large number of cards, it quickly became a staple of early competitive play. The artwork for the original release was provided by Mark Poole, whose iconic, surrealist-influenced style defined the aesthetic of the early game's spells.

The International Collectors' Edition version, released in 1993 as a promotional non-tournament set, features a distinct gold border on the reverse side to differentiate it from regulation cards. This edition was produced to give players access to high-demand, rare cards for casual play and collections. While it lacks the tournament legality of the base game, it remains highly regarded by collectors for its role in preserving the art and design language of the game's foundational era.
