Savannah

The Savannah card, numbered 281 in the International Collectors' Edition (ICE) set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. This set was created as a promotional tool for the international market, intended to provide players outside of North America with access to early Magic: The Gathering cards. Because the cards were produced with a distinct gold-bordered backing and a non-tournament-legal finish, they were clearly differentiated from the original limited printings, allowing the game to grow its global footprint without disrupting the secondary market value of the core sets.

The card features the original artwork by Jesper Myrfors, the game's first art director. Myrfors sought to establish a classic, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the visual identity of the earliest sets. As a land card representing the savanna biome, the design utilizes a simplistic, evocative style typical of the foundational era of the game. It was received by the player base as a functional, accessible version of a rare card, serving its purpose as a gateway for international collectors and players to engage with the game's nascent competitive scene.
