Where it came from
Brainstorm is a quintessential blue instant from the Magic: The Gathering card game, originally debuting in the 1996 Ice Age set. The card allows a player to draw three cards and then place two from their hand back on top of their library, a powerful effect that has made it a cornerstone of competitive play across multiple formats, particularly Legacy and Vintage. Its ubiquity stems from its ability to provide card selection and manipulate the top of the deck, which interacts favorably with shuffling effects.
The Strixhaven Mystical Archive version, featuring artwork by Mossley, was released in 2021 as part of a special subset within the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. This version was designed to celebrate the history of powerful spells in the game, utilizing a unique, ornate Japanese-inspired aesthetic that distinguishes the Archive cards from the standard set. It was received with significant enthusiasm by collectors for its distinct visual identity and the inclusion of high-utility cards in a premium, stylized treatment.
