Where it came from
Brainstorm was originally printed in the 1996 expansion Ice Age, but this specific iteration was released in the 1999 set Mercadian Masques. The card was designed as an efficient blue spell that allows a player to draw three cards and then place two cards from their hand back on top of their library, providing powerful deck manipulation and card quality control that has remained a staple in competitive formats for decades.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Hannibal King, whose stylistic contribution captures the chaotic and cerebral essence of the spell. Throughout its history, the card has been lauded by the Magic: The Gathering community for its versatility, serving as a fundamental tool for strategy in both casual and professional play, despite the set Mercadian Masques itself often being remembered for its more divisive mechanics.
