Where it came from
Brainstorm was originally released as a common in the 1995 Magic: The Gathering expansion Ice Age, quickly establishing itself as a foundational card in the game's history. It is widely considered one of the most powerful blue spells ever printed, allowing players to draw three cards and then place two from their hand back on top of their library, which provides unparalleled deck manipulation and consistency in competitive formats.
The Secret Lair version featuring collector number 1 was part of the inaugural drop in December 2019, which signaled Wizards of the Coast's move toward direct-to-consumer premium releases. This specific iteration was illustrated by artist Dominik Mayer, who moved away from the traditional high-fantasy look to employ a striking, expressionist aesthetic characterized by bold shapes and a distinctively moody, avant-garde color palette.
