Provenance

Where it came from

Brainstorm was released as part of the 'Secret Lair: Prime Slime' drop, a specialized collection released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. This set was designed to lean into the 'ooze' subgenre of creature types within Magic: The Gathering, offering a thematic departure from standard card frame aesthetics. The card serves as a thematic reimagining of a foundational spell, utilizing the game's established mechanics while leaning into a distinct, vibrant visual identity.

The artwork for this specific iteration was created by Kev Walker, a longtime illustrator for the franchise known for his gritty and highly textured style. In this version, Walker pivots to a surrealist depiction of the Ooze aesthetic, emphasizing fluid shapes and acidic color palettes. The card was received as a stylistic collectible, catering to players who prioritize unique card frame treatments and artist-specific interpretations of classic, high-utility gameplay staples.
