Burst Lightning // Burst Lightning

Burst Lightning from the Secrets of Strixhaven Art Series was released in 2021 as a part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These Art Series cards were included as a special collectible insert in Set Boosters, designed to showcase the expanded illustrative potential of the game. They are printed on a larger, non-gameplay standard that highlights the artwork without the traditional card frame, acting as a gallery-style collectible rather than a functional piece for play.

The illustration for this card was provided by artist Volkan Baga. Baga is known for a painterly, detailed approach that emphasizes atmosphere and light, which he utilized here to depict the intense magical energy characteristic of the spell. Upon release, the series was well-received by collectors who appreciated the focus on the aesthetic craft behind Magic’s visual identity, as these prints serve to isolate the artist's work from the mechanical text that usually crowds the canvas.
