Where it came from
Capsize was originally printed as a rare card in the 1997 Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This particular version is part of the 1998 World Championship Decks, a product line that commemorated the top-performing decks from the 1998 World Championship tournament in Seattle. These decks were printed with a distinct gold border and signature-backed cards, designed specifically for enthusiasts who wanted to play with the exact strategies used by professional players at the highest level of competition.
The art for Capsize was created by illustrator Kev Walker, who has been a prolific contributor to the game for decades. The design intended to evoke the chaotic, roiling power of a literal sea-swallowing wave, perfectly matching the card's function as a repeatable bounce spell that could return any permanent to an opponent's hand. Within the context of the 1998 professional meta, the card was highly regarded for its versatility and late-game control potential, earning it a permanent place in the archives of competitive deck design.
