Where it came from
Capricopian was released in 2020 as part of the Arcane Maelstrom deck for the Commander 2020 set. Designed by Wizards of the Coast as part of their annual expansion dedicated to the popular Commander multiplayer format, the card was created to provide support for a 'mutate' strategy, a mechanic introduced in the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set that allows players to stack creature cards to combine their abilities.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who rendered the mythical creature as a stylized, antlered beast suited to the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Ikoria plane. Upon its debut, the card was recognized by players as a flexible utility tool for green-based Commander decks, valued for its ability to scale in power and provide repeatable mana ramp in the late game.
