Carnivorous Death-Parrot

The Carnivorous Death-Parrot was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a 'silver-bordered' set, Unhinged was designed by Wizards of the Coast to exist outside the bounds of tournament legality, allowing the design team to experiment with mechanics that were humorous, chaotic, or physically impossible to enforce in standard play. The set was created to provide a lighthearted counterpoint to the more serious tone of the core game.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Daren Bader. In keeping with the set's subversive and whimsical spirit, Bader depicted the parrot with an aggressive, predatory demeanor that contrasted sharply with the typical portrayal of domestic birds. The design was received by the player base as a quintessential example of the set's irreverent humor, blending dark thematic elements with the absurdity characteristic of the Unhinged design philosophy.
