Provenance

Where it came from

Shardless Agent was originally released in the 2011 Planechase expansion, designed as a key card for the 'Velvet Rounds' deck. It represents an agent of the Shardless, a faction within the lore of the plane of Alara, specifically from the Grixis shard. The card introduced the 'cascade' mechanic to a two-mana creature, allowing players to cast an additional spell for free, which quickly established it as a powerful tool in competitive formats like Legacy and Modern.

The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, whose dark, textured style captures the shadowy and unstable nature of the Grixis environment. The design intent focused on high-variance play, rewarding players for carefully managing their deck composition. Upon its release, it became a staple for its efficiency and ability to generate significant card advantage, eventually necessitating its inclusion in the 2016 Planechase Anthology collection to preserve its availability for players.
