Provenance

Where it came from

The Channel card, appearing as number 184 in the 30th Anniversary Edition of Magic: The Gathering, serves as a direct reprint of an iconic card originally debuting in the 1993 Alpha set. This edition was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to commemorate three decades of the game, utilizing a non-tournament legal card stock and a distinct back design to differentiate it from official play cards while celebrating the historical evolution of the game's mechanics.

The design of the original card was the work of Richard Garfield, the game's creator, with artwork provided by Christopher Rush. The card is historically significant for its role in enabling high-risk, high-reward strategies that defined early competitive play, often serving as a central engine in powerful combo decks. The 30th Anniversary Edition aimed to capture the visual legacy of these early cards for collectors, maintaining the classic aesthetic that remains a cornerstone of the game's cultural identity.
