Where it came from
Channel was released in 1994 as part of the Revised Edition core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the card was originally printed in the Alpha and Beta sets before being included in Revised to ensure continued availability for players. Its inclusion reflected the high-powered design philosophy of the game's earliest years, characterized by cards that enabled explosive, fast-paced gameplay.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators from the early years of the game. Rush's design captured the intense, transformative nature of the spell, depicting a figure channeling vast amounts of energy. While it was highly effective in competitive play, its ability to bypass traditional mana costs led to its eventual restriction and banning in many formats to maintain the balance of the game's environment.
