Provenance

Where it came from

The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993 as a non-tournament legal box set designed to showcase the complete Magic: The Gathering base set to fans and collectors. Following the massive success of the game's initial print runs, these cards were created with a gold-bordered back to distinguish them from standard gameplay cards, ensuring they remained distinct while providing players with access to some of the game's most powerful and iconic early mechanics.

The Channel card was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prominent artists in the early history of the game. His design for Channel reflects the ethereal, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Alpha and Beta sets. Upon its release, the card quickly became a focal point for competitive discussions due to its immense potential to manipulate mana, eventually becoming a centerpiece of the infamous 'Channel-Fireball' combination that helped define early-game strategy and design considerations.
