Where it came from
Chatterfang, Squirrel General debuted as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set in 2021, though the specific card identified here originates from the Bloomburrow Commander release, which revisits the whimsical, woodland-inspired themes popularized by earlier sets. The card was designed to serve as a synergistic commander for squirrel-themed decks, tapping into a long-standing player demand for a powerful tribal leader for one of Magic: The Gathering's most beloved creature types.
The art was rendered by Kevin Sidery, who imbued the character with a balance of regal authority and naturalistic menace. The design focuses on the mechanic of generating squirrel tokens and leveraging them for sacrifice effects, which has been widely praised by the community for its efficient playability and the flavorful way it encapsulates the chaotic, swarming nature of a squirrel army.
