Where it came from
Chatterfang, Squirrel General was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to provide a long-awaited, viable commander for Squirrel-themed decks, tapping into the community's persistent nostalgia for the tribe which had previously been relegated to humorous or 'silver-bordered' sets. The card effectively solidified the Squirrel creature type as a legitimate mechanical archetype in competitive gameplay.
The character was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the General's imposing, militaristic aesthetic while maintaining the whimsical nature of the creature type. The design leans into the thematic duality of the card, where Chatterfang functions as both a token generator and a strategic sacrifice engine. Upon its release, it was highly regarded by players for its balanced complexity and the rewarding gameplay loop it created for deck builders.
