Where it came from
Chatterfang, Squirrel General was originally introduced in the 2021 Modern Horizons 2 set, signaling a long-awaited mechanical focus on the squirrel creature type within Magic: The Gathering. As a legendary creature, it was designed to function as a commander, rewarding players for flooding the board with squirrel tokens by offering a flexible removal ability that scales with the number of tokens under their control.
The card’s illustration, rendered by artist Jason Felix, captures the character's mischievous and somewhat feral aesthetic, consistent with the whimsical yet slightly dangerous tone often associated with squirrel-themed cards in the game. Upon its release, Chatterfang was widely embraced by the player community for its efficient synergy and unique board-control capabilities, solidifying its place as one of the most popular leaders for tribal-themed decks in the Commander format.
