Where it came from
Citadel Siege was released in 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as part of a cycle of enchantments representing the five dragon clans of the Tarkir plane, with this specific card highlighting the Abzan Houses. It was created to provide players with a versatile choice between offense and defense, capturing the flavor of a fortress holding out against an encroaching enemy.
The artwork was illustrated by Cynthia Sheppard, who utilized a warm, earthy color palette to reflect the resilient, survivalist nature of the Abzan culture. Her design emphasizes the theme of fortification, utilizing architectural motifs inspired by desert cultures to ground the card’s strategic utility in the visual identity of the set. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its impact in limited formats and its thematic adherence to the lore of the block.
