Where it came from
Citadel Siege was released in 2014 as part of the Commander 2016 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a versatile enchantment, it was created to provide players with a choice between offensive and defensive strategies, reflecting the political and tactical nature of the Commander format, which emphasizes multiplayer dynamics and board state control.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game whose work is noted for its high level of detail and atmospheric lighting. The artwork depicts a fortified structure undergoing a shift in tactical focus, embodying the card's mechanics of selecting either 'Khans' to buff attacking creatures or 'Dragons' to neutralize threats, a design choice that was well-received by the community for its strategic flexibility.
