Where it came from
Citadel Siege was released in 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a pivotal moment in the set's narrative, set on the plane of Tarkir, where players choose between two modes reflecting a tactical approach to combat. It is classified as a rare enchantment and was designed to emphasize the color identity of Abzan, a faction defined by resilience and defensive fortification.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the fortified towers of the Abzan clans under heavy assault. The visual direction aimed to capture the stark, brutalist architecture of the desert-dwelling culture while emphasizing the mechanical choice offered to the player. Upon its release, the card was well-received for its versatility in Limited and Commander formats, becoming a staple for white-black-green decks focused on slow-paced board control.
