Where it came from
Citadel Siege first appeared in the Fate Reforged expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2015, designed as a powerful enchantment for the Abzan Houses. It was created to embody the faction's resilience and tactical defensive nature, offering players a choice between bolstering their own creatures or disrupting enemy lines. The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose artwork captures the imposing, fortified aesthetic of the Abzan aesthetic on the plane of Tarkir.
This specific printing comes from the 2018 Commander Anthology Volume II, a curated collection intended to reprint popular and highly playable cards from the Commander format's history. By including it in this anthology, Wizards of the Coast sought to provide players with accessible versions of staple cards that had become central to the multiplayer experience. The design remains faithful to the original iteration, maintaining its mechanical identity while updating the frame and set symbol to reflect its inclusion in this retrospective release.
