What it does

The most terrifying thing about the Craw Wurm is probably the horrible crashing sound it makes as it speeds through the forest. This noise is so loud it echoes through the trees and seems to come from all directions at once.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Craw Wurm was originally released as a common card in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a formidable, simple green creature that served as a staple of early gameplay. The Collector's Edition version, released in late 1993, was a non-tournament-legal boxed set produced to serve as a high-quality display version of the game's earliest cards, distinguished by square corners and a gold-foil back.

The card illustration, created by artist Dan Frazier, portrays the creature as a massive, serpentine beast emerging from the earth, capturing the primal nature of the Green color identity in the game. While the Craw Wurm itself was seen as a standard threat during the formative years of Magic, the Collector's Edition printing is highly regarded by collectors today for its role in preserving the classic aesthetic of the game's inception.
