What it does

The most terrifying thing about the Craw Wurm is probably the horrible crashing sound it makes as it speeds through the forest. This noise is so loud it echoes through the trees and seems to come from all directions at once.

Provenance

Where it came from

Craw Wurm originated in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering, released in 1993, representing one of the game's iconic 'vanilla' creatures—a card with high power and toughness but no unique abilities. The artwork for the Revised Edition, which launched in 1994, carries over the original illustration by Dan Frazier. Frazier, a foundational artist for the early game, used a stark, illustrative style that defined the aesthetic of early Magic, focusing on the imposing scale of the creature within a dense, earthy landscape.

The card was designed as a quintessential 'green' threat, balancing its massive combat presence with a relatively high casting cost that necessitated early-game ramp. Within the context of the Revised Edition, which served as a core set intended to broaden the game's accessibility, the Craw Wurm remained a staple for beginners. Its reception was largely defined by its reliability as a late-game finisher in limited formats, cementing its place as a nostalgic touchstone for players who started during the game's formative years.
