Where it came from
Crux of Fate was originally released in the 2015 set Fate Reforged, designed to depict a pivotal moment in the conflict between the dragonlord Nicol Bolas and the spirit dragon Ugin. The card serves as a powerful board wipe specifically targeting non-dragon creatures, reflecting the draconic hierarchy and power struggle that defined the narrative arc of the Tarkir block.
The version from the Strixhaven Mystical Archive, appearing as card number 25, features unique Japanese-inspired alternate art. This subset was introduced in 2021 as a celebratory collection of iconic instant and sorcery spells throughout Magic: The Gathering history. The aesthetic choices for this specific printing were curated to fit the prestigious, academic theme of the Strixhaven University setting, emphasizing high-fantasy, ornate illustration styles that have become highly sought after by collectors for their distinct visual departure from standard card frame designs.
