Where it came from
Culling Ritual was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card represents the magical studies at Witherbloom College, one of the five houses of Strixhaven, which focuses on the intersection of life and death, biology, and decay. In the game's mechanics, the card serves as a board wipe that punishes opponents for playing low-cost permanents, thematic to the college's focus on reaping value from the cycle of life.
The artwork was illustrated by Ryan Pancoast, an artist known for his detailed, atmospheric fantasy work. Pancoast designed the image to reflect the aesthetics of Witherbloom's swampy, botanical environment, emphasizing the ritualistic aspect of the spell. Upon release, the card was well-received by the competitive community, particularly in the Commander format, where it became a staple tool for controlling the battlefield state against decks reliant on mana rocks and low-cost utility creatures.
