Where it came from
Culling Ritual was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, specifically appearing in the expansion's promotional releases. The card embodies the aesthetic of the Witherbloom College, which focuses on the intersection of life and death, reflecting the darker, biological magics taught within the university's curriculum.
The artwork for this particular printing was executed by illustrator Irina Nordsol Kuzmina. Her design emphasizes the visceral nature of the spell, utilizing deep greens and necrotic textures to convey the ritualistic consumption of permanents on the battlefield. Upon its release, the card was received as a potent tactical tool in commander formats, praised for its ability to clear low-cost threats while generating significant mana reserves for the caster.
