Where it came from
Culling Ritual was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander expansion. Designed for the format's unique high-mana, permanent-heavy meta, the card serves as a powerful board wipe that scales in utility by punishing opponents who play multiple low-cost permanents early in the game. It is thematic to the Witherbloom College, which emphasizes the cycle of life and death, reflecting the card's mechanic of destroying permanents to generate a surge of mana.
The artwork was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who captured the grim, academic aesthetic of Strixhaven's darker corners. His design conveys the ritualistic essence of the effect, depicting the consumption of worldly assets to fuel magical growth. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its strategic depth, acting as both a defensive stabilizer and an aggressive mana engine that rewards players for navigating complex board states.
