Where it came from
Dark Salvation was originally printed in Eldritch Moon in 2016, designed to capture the atmospheric gothic horror aesthetic of the plane of Innistrad. The card features a mechanic that allows players to create a swarm of Zombie creature tokens while simultaneously weakening an opponent's creature, reflecting the flavor of a relentless, overwhelming undead uprising. It was reprinted in the Midnight Hunt Commander set in 2021 to support the return to this beloved horror-themed setting, providing synergy for tribal deck builds.
The artwork for this printing was created by Kieran Yanner, a prolific contributor to Magic: The Gathering. Yanner’s illustration leans into the grim, moody environment of Innistrad, utilizing deep shadows and cold tones to evoke a sense of creeping dread. His design choices were intended to emphasize the chaotic and transformative nature of dark necromancy, aligning with the overall artistic direction of the Midnight Hunt expansion which sought to balance classic creature tropes with modern, high-fantasy polish.
