Where it came from
Dark Ritual was originally released as a black-aligned common card in the 1993 Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a foundational mana-acceleration spell, it allows players to gain three black mana for the cost of one, embodying the color's thematic philosophy of achieving rapid power at a significant cost. The 30th Anniversary Edition version, released in 2022, is a direct visual tribute to this original release, intended to celebrate three decades of the game's history by reproducing cards from the early sets with a non-tournament-legal gold-stamped back.
The iconic illustration for the original card was created by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific early artists in the game's history. His work on Dark Ritual, characterized by its moody, ritualistic imagery, helped establish the visual identity of black magic in the game. In the 30th Anniversary Edition, this classic aesthetic is preserved to appeal to longtime players and collectors who value the nostalgia of early Magic art and the history of its core mechanics.
