Where it came from
Dark Salvation was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the gothic horror plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the narrative arc of the set, which depicts the corruption of the plane by the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The card represents the rising tide of the undead, specifically the zombies of the Nephalia region, as they rally under the encroaching madness.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and emotionally resonant style. In designing the piece, Voss captured the swarm-like nature of the zombie horde emerging from the shadows, emphasizing the decaying, otherworldly aesthetic associated with the set's mutation theme. Upon its release, it was noted for its unique synergy within black-aligned decks, specifically for its ability to both act as removal and as a token-generating engine, making it a functional staple in casual and competitive formats.
