Where it came from
Smothering Tithe first appeared in the Ravnica Allegiance expansion in 2019, quickly establishing itself as a staple of Commander format play due to its ability to impose a significant tax on opponents drawing extra cards. The card represents the Orzhov Syndicate's philosophy of mandatory tribute and bureaucratic extraction, visually capturing the oppressive nature of the guild's control over the citizens of Ravnica through its relentless drain on resources.
The Enchanting Tales version, released as part of the 2023 Wilds of Eldraine set, reimagined the card with a distinct storybook art style. This reprint was part of a special bonus sheet designed to evoke the whimsical, folkloric aesthetic of the plane of Eldraine, utilizing a unique frame treatment that contrasts sharply with the original's gritty urban fantasy roots while maintaining the mechanical functionality that made the card a perennial favorite among players.
