Dash Hopes

Dash Hopes was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore an alternate timeline where the game's mechanics and color philosophies shifted, resulting in cards that blended the identities of different colors. As a black-aligned counterspell, Dash Hopes represents this experimental design philosophy, challenging the traditional color pie by granting black a defensive ability usually reserved for blue.

The card’s artwork was a collaborative effort by Zoltan Boros and Gabor Szikszai, a duo known for their dynamic, atmospheric fantasy illustrations during this era of the game. They sought to convey the visceral, high-stakes nature of the spell’s effect—forcing an opponent to choose between paying life or having their action negated. Upon its release, the card was widely discussed by players for its unique mechanical implementation, though it ultimately found a niche role rather than becoming a staple in competitive play.
