Where it came from
Mana Tithe was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set, the second expansion in the Time Spiral block. This set explored an alternate reality where historical events in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse unfolded differently. The design philosophy of this cycle was to perform 'color pie breaks,' featuring effects traditionally reserved for one color appearing in another, in this case manifesting a counterspell effect within white, a color typically restricted from such direct interference.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a renowned fantasy artist known for his sophisticated painterly style. His depiction features an ethereal, armored figure enforcing a magical tax, which visually reinforced the card's mechanical function of demanding an additional mana cost from the opponent. Upon release, it was received as a surprising and often frustrating 'color-shifted' tool that allowed white decks to disrupt strategies in ways their opponents did not expect.
