Where it came from
The Vesuvan Doppelganger, originally appearing in Magic: The Gathering's Alpha set, gained a uniquely notorious history when it was included in the 1994 Summer Magic print run, often referred to by collectors as the Edgar set. This limited production run was intended to replace a damaged inventory of Revised Edition cards but was withdrawn due to a high density of errors and misprints, leading to the majority of the print run being destroyed. The few copies that entered circulation became some of the most sought-after rarities in the hobby's history.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a pivotal figure in the game's early aesthetic who favored a romantic, flowing style that distinguished his work from the more rigid fantasy art of the period. His design for the Doppelganger—depicting a figure in a state of fluid, metamorphic transition—perfectly captured the card's mechanical function of copying other creatures. The art remains a touchstone for early Magic collectors, representing a departure from traditional creature tropes toward a more abstract and evocative visual language.
