Fog

The Fog card from the Summer Magic set, colloquially known as the Edgar set, occupies a unique position in the history of Magic: The Gathering. Produced in 1994, this set was an unauthorized print run created by Cartamundi after a request from Wizards of the Coast was misunderstood, leading to a small quantity of cards being printed with a distinct, lighter color palette and different card stock compared to the Revised Edition. Because it was never intended for public release, these cards were largely forgotten until they were rediscovered in a warehouse years later, leading to their eventual sale and distribution among collectors.

The illustration for Fog features the classic artwork by Anson Maddocks, who was one of the original artists hired to define the visual identity of the game in its infancy. His work on this card depicts a swirling, atmospheric mist that emphasizes the card's mechanical function of preventing combat damage. Within the community, the Summer Magic version is highly regarded for its visual idiosyncrasies, such as the white borders and the unique saturation levels that distinguish it from the standard core sets of the era.
