Where it came from
Defense of the Heart was originally printed as a rare enchantment in the 1999 Urza's Destiny expansion, designed as part of the Urza block's complex mechanical narrative. The card allows a player to tutor two creature cards from their library onto the battlefield if an opponent controls at least three creatures, serving as a powerful reactive tool that punishes aggressive board states. Its inclusion in the Secret Lair series reflects its enduring status as a high-impact staple in the Commander format.
This specific iteration, numbered 1039, features distinct, stylized illustrative work that deviates from the card's original aesthetic. Released as part of a curated Secret Lair drop, the design emphasizes a more contemporary, artist-driven visual identity that has become a hallmark of the premium print-on-demand releases by Wizards of the Coast. These versions are often pursued by collectors for their unique aesthetic departure from the standard set printings.
