Where it came from
Defense of the Heart was originally released in the 1999 Urza's Legacy set, designed by Wizards of the Coast to reflect the high-fantasy themes of the Urza block. The card mechanical design focused on powerful enchantment effects that punish opponents for expansive battlefield strategies, cementing its status as a staple for green-aligned decks in the Commander format.
The Enchanting Tales version, appearing in the 2023 Wilds of Eldraine set, features reimagined artwork by artist Donato Giancola. This special subset was designed as a thematic homage to classic fairy tales, utilizing a distinct storybook frame aesthetic that contrasts with the original industrial art style to better suit the plane of Eldraine.
