Where it came from
Defense of the Heart was originally printed in the 1999 Urza's Destiny expansion, designed as an iconic green enchantment intended to punish opponents for playing creatures. Its inclusion in the Secret Lair series, specifically the 'Showcase: Modern Horizons 2' style release, reflects Wizards of the Coast's ongoing strategy of reimagining classic Magic: The Gathering cards through distinct, artist-led aesthetic lenses to appeal to both long-term players and collectors.
This particular printing features the striking, bold illustrative work of artist Chris Rahn. Rahn’s design for this version emphasizes the card's theme of predatory instinct and looming threat, utilizing a stylized, high-contrast visual language that deviates from the original’s traditional fantasy art. The reception within the community was largely positive, as players frequently seek out Secret Lair variants to provide a curated, unique flair to their competitive and casual decks.
