Where it came from
Defense of the Heart, card number 76 from the 1990 Marvel Universe Series 1 trading card set, was produced by Impel Marketing. Released during a pivotal moment for the comic book industry, this set aimed to capitalize on the rising popularity of superhero collectibles by featuring classic character art alongside biographical data and power statistics on the card backs. The design followed a standardized aesthetic characterized by a bold, colorful border and a specific numbering system that helped establish the inaugural baseline for modern Marvel trading cards.
The illustrations for this set were drawn from a wide variety of established Marvel artists, reflecting the house style of the late eighties and early nineties. The cards were designed to be accessible to both casual fans and dedicated collectors, emphasizing character lore and the interconnected nature of the Marvel multiverse. At the time of release, these cards were highly successful, effectively bridging the gap between the comic book medium and the burgeoning hobby of non-sports card collecting.
