Where it came from
Defense of the Heart was originally released in the 1999 Urza's Destiny expansion, designed to evoke the high-fantasy tropes of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card mechanics center on the theme of opposing overwhelming force, reflecting the strategic tension often found in mid-to-late game interactions. It has long been recognized for its powerful ability to bridge the gap between early board presence and massive late-game creatures.
The 2023 Enchanting Tales version, numbered 80 in the Wilds of Eldraine set, serves as a premium aesthetic reprint of the classic card. This version utilizes the specialized 'story book' frame, a design choice intended to emphasize the folklore-inspired setting of Eldraine. The illustration maintains the core thematic essence of the original while adhering to the uniform, artistic art style characteristic of the Enchanting Tales bonus sheet, which was widely praised by players for revitalizing iconic enchantments.
