Provenance

Where it came from

The Clue token was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to support the 'Investigate' keyword introduced in this set, allowing players to create artifact tokens that could be sacrificed to draw a card. This mechanic was central to the set's gothic horror theme, emphasizing the mystery and psychological tension inherent to the plane of Innistrad.

The art was created by Raoul Vitale, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style consistent with the visual identity of the Innistrad block. The token depicts a magnifying glass hovering over a cryptic, parchment-like background, effectively communicating the flavor of detective work and hidden knowledge. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its functional simplicity and the immersive way it tied the card's utility to the set's overarching investigative narrative.
