Provenance

Where it came from

The Clue token was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad set for the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game. Within the game's mechanics, these tokens represent an artifact that players create to investigate the gothic horror mysteries pervasive in the Innistrad plane, allowing them to sacrifice the token to draw a card and simulate the act of uncovering hidden information.

The art was created by Jung Park, who focused on a cryptic, atmospheric design that emphasizes the thematic weight of the set. The illustration depicts a weathered, glowing magnifying glass cast against a shadowy, textured background, which perfectly aligns with the set's broader aesthetic of investigators exploring a world terrorized by Eldrazi horrors. The card was well-received for its clean, functional design, quickly becoming a staple in decks that rely on deck-filtering mechanics.
