Where it came from
The Frog Lizard token, collector number 13, was released in late 2023 as part of the ancillary set accompanying The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander decks. In the context of Magic: The Gathering, these tokens serve as physical representations of board states created by specific cards, such as The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride, which mandates the creation of these creatures during gameplay.
The art was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who designed the creature to embody the aesthetic of the Ixalan plane—a lush, subterranean world teeming with prehistoric life and ancient civilizations. The design captures the unique fusion of reptilian and amphibian features that defines this specific token type, balancing the predatory nature of a lizard with the squat, opportunistic characteristics of a frog to fit the game's high-fantasy art direction.
