Where it came from
The Dinosaur Cat token was released in 2020 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Commander 2020 accessory set. These tokens are functional game pieces used during matches to represent temporary creatures created by specific card abilities, such as the effect found on the card 'Nettoier le Passé'. The set was designed to support the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion, which leaned heavily into the concept of creature mutation and hybrid typings.
The artwork for this token was produced by Wizards of the Coast's internal art direction team to maintain stylistic consistency across the expansion. The design brief focused on blending the ferocity of a predatory dinosaur with the anatomy of a house cat, a visual punchline reflective of the whimsical and chaotic nature of the set's mutate mechanics. As a standard utility token, it was received as a functional necessity by players rather than a standalone art piece, though it remains a noted curiosity for collectors of unusual token designs.
