Where it came from
Diplomacy of the Wastes was released in early 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card belongs to a block focused on time travel and alternate timelines, specifically depicting a pivotal moment in the history of the Tarkir plane where the arrival of the dragon planeswalker Sarkhan Vol altered the course of dragon-kind's extinction. It serves as a narrative piece illustrating the political machinations occurring within the Abzan clan, one of the five warring factions of that setting.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Nils Hamm, a frequent contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and moody style. Hamm was tasked with visualizing the tense negotiation between the Abzan leaders and the encroaching forces of the dragon brood. The piece is highly regarded by players and art enthusiasts for its effective use of shadow and composition, which helps convey the heavy, weary tone of the Abzan culture as they desperately attempt to maintain order in an increasingly hostile environment.
