Where it came from
Diplomatic Escort was originally printed in the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in 1999. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the card reflects the political and mercantile themes of the world, where intrigue and negotiation were central to the storyline. It was designed to provide utility within the blue color pie, specifically offering a way to counter spells that targeted one's own permanents, fitting the protective and reactive nature of the faction represented.
The illustration was produced by artist Scott M. Fischer, who contributed extensively to the visual identity of the game during this era. His work on this card utilized a distinctive, slightly elongated stylistic approach that became a signature of his contributions to the Mercadian Masques set. Upon release, the card was received as a niche technical tool for players focusing on control-oriented deck strategies, specifically those seeking to safeguard their board state against disruption.
