Where it came from
Diplomatic Immunity was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore a trade-focused, pseudo-industrial world of mercenaries and political intrigue, distancing itself from the high-fantasy tropes of previous expansions. The card was intended to provide a unique protective utility for creatures, utilizing the shroud mechanic to represent a literal cloak of untouchable political status.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Randy Gallegos. His design captures the theme of bureaucratic isolation through the depiction of a cloaked figure shielded by shimmering, magical warding. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but effective tool in casual play and specific combo strategies, valued primarily for its ability to render key creatures immune to targeted spells while remaining relatively affordable compared to more prominent staples of the era.
