Dragon Whelp

Dragon Whelp was originally featured in the Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, but the version from the Summer Magic set, also known as the Edgar set, holds a unique place in card history. Produced in 1994, Summer Magic was intended to be a corrected retail release but suffered from a massive printing error, leading to the vast majority of the stock being recalled and destroyed by Wizards of the Coast. Consequently, the few surviving copies escaped into the secondary market, becoming some of the most sought-after rarities in the game.

The card’s illustration was created by Melissa Benson, whose distinctive style defined many of the early fantasy creatures in the game. Her design captures the classic aesthetic of the high-fantasy era, emphasizing a tactile, hand-drawn look that characterized the early Magic sets. The card was well-received by players for its ability to grow in power through mana expenditure, making it a staple of red-aligned decks and a memorable piece of the game's formative design identity.
