Where it came from
The Brass Man card was originally released as part of the Alpha set in 1993, later appearing in the limited 1994 Summer Magic expansion, often referred to as Edgar. Summer Magic was intended as a corrected reprint of the Revised edition but was largely destroyed due to a significant printing error involving the color palette, making surviving cards from this print run exceptionally scarce artifacts of Magic: The Gathering history.
The card was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic artists in the early history of the game. His design for the Brass Man depicts a mechanical construct in a classic fantasy style, adhering to the game's early visual language. The creature's ability to untap only during its controller's upkeep reflects the thematic restriction of a clockwork-inspired artifact creature, a design choice that has been revisited in various forms throughout the game's long-standing mechanical evolution.
